When people prepare a fencing order, most of the discussion is usually about the panels. Buyers confirm the height, width, material and colour, then add the gates to the same order.
But gates are not simply wider fence panels.
A fence panel stays in one position after installation. A gate has to move repeatedly, carry its own weight and remain properly aligned with the surrounding fence. For a contractor or distributor, overlooking these details can create problems during installation even when the panels themselves are perfectly manufactured.
Before a gate is produced, the actual opening needs to be clear.
The required gate width, height and the position of the supporting posts should be confirmed in advance. This becomes particularly important when the fence is being installed between existing structures, walls or other fixed points.
For a project with several gates, it is also worth listing each opening separately. Assuming that every gate is the same size can cause unnecessary adjustments later.
A standard fence post mainly holds a panel in place. A gate post has a much harder job.
Every time the gate opens or closes, the posts take additional load. Larger gates place even more weight and movement on the supporting structure. This is why a gate post may need to be larger or stronger than the posts used along the fence line.
This is something worth deciding before production, rather than trying to solve it after the fence has arrived on site.
Hinges and latches may look like small components, but they can have a big effect on how the finished gate works.
The hinge needs to support the gate and allow smooth movement. The latch needs to line up correctly when the gate closes. The fixing method also needs to suit the gate frame and post.
For distributors and contractors, it is usually easier to order the gate and its matching hardware as one system. This reduces the risk of receiving components that look suitable but do not work well together.
A single pedestrian gate is relatively simple. A wide double gate requires more planning.
With a double gate, both leaves need to meet correctly in the centre. The posts must remain stable, the hinges need to carry the load, and the latch or drop bolt needs to work with the final position of both leaves.
For wider commercial openings, these details become even more important. A gate that looks good on a drawing may still need a different structure once the actual opening and installation conditions are considered.
Ground conditions are another detail that is easy to overlook.
A gate needs enough clearance to open without hitting the ground. Sloping driveways, uneven paving and changes in ground level can all affect the required gap beneath the gate.
This is why the installation environment should be discussed before production, especially for gates being made to specific project dimensions.
The easiest way to avoid these problems is to treat the gate as part of the complete fencing system.
Before placing an order, confirm the opening, gate size, post specification, hinge and latch requirements, ground clearance and installation conditions together with the fence design.
For overseas buyers, this extra step can save much more than it costs. A well-planned gate arrives ready to work with the rest of the fence, rather than becoming the part of the project that needs to be modified on site.
The fence panel may form most of the fence, but the gate is often where the details matter most.
